help us locate similar arts orgs/programming/projects

BECA is on the hunt to locate other arts orgs/programming/projects (or even commercial galleries) here in the USA and abroad who engage in an open-call submission policy for a minimum of 3 of their exhibitions each year. This means that for each of at least 3 exhibitions each year, an org/gallery/project issues a public open-call for submissions whereby each submitting artist's work is reviewed equally along with the rest of the submissions and whereby none of the exhibiting artists for any of those 3 resulting exhibitions is exhibiting by invitation alone. The purpose of our search is to not only locate likeminded efforts, but to also highlight those orgs/programs/projects who are engaging in a broad, inclusive and open practice with regards to the selection of work for their exhibitions and to also educate others about the unique benefits derived from such practices and hopefully encourage others to adopt similar practices.  Right now we know of very few exhibition programs/projects other than BECA's programming which consistently practice an open-call submission policy. We hope that will soon change.

The BECA Foundation began after hearing complaints from dozens and eventually hundreds of emerging artists that they were tired of jumping through hoops (or worse) in order to have their work reviewed for possible public exhibition. The sometimes archaic art world maze was frustrating, zapping them of the energy they should have been using to create their work. The other side of the picture is that the public then only receives a limited experience of contemporary art today - many times through a filtered lens of favorites. The best of what's yet to come on this planet is fueled by new art + new design. If artists get shut out of the process because of who they don't know or what's not on their CV or their refusal to brown nose or to create work that appeases those who hold the keys to the shiny art world towers, than we all suffer as a society.

Our intention is not to devalue exhibitions which are created via more traditional practices. Our goal is to reveal and create alternatives that broaden the level of participation. Our intention is to compile the resulting information for use by both artists and the public so that they may learn more about the benefits that can be derived via the open-call process and also where they may find those programs which are creating at least 3 exhibitions per year which culminate via the use of this open-call practice. Many exhibition programs offer an annual open call. We are interested in highlighting and encouraging those programs which are pushing beyond that once per year event thereby broadening an artist's access to exhibition opportunities while simultaneously creating greater diversity amongst exhibitions for the public to experience. Please forward weblinks to exhibition programs/projects which you feel may help us to fulfill our search to becafoundation (at) gmail (dot) com with the subject line 'open-call programs'. Many thanks for your help with this search. We will post our findings before the end of the year.

open call for WEAR ART launch

  Wear_art

As a Special Project of CURATE THIS! 2010 (www.CurateThis.org), The BECA Foundation will launch WEAR ART this fall as both an ongoing BECA fundraiser and income source for pARTicipating artists, architects + designers. WEAR ART will feature new works of art + design screenprinted and/or embroidered on wearables such as t-shirts, messenger bags, etc. It will also feature original works of art and design that happen to be wearable.

Works by artists, architects + designers currently pARTicipating in CURATE THIS! 2010 are already being reviewed for possible inclusion in WEAR ART and will be contacted if there is an interest in having one or more of your works included in WEAR ART. Othere artists, architects + designers, at least 18 years of age, residing in any country around the world who wish to have their work considered for possible inclusion in WEAR ART, may send a link where we may view your current work online to becafoundation@gmail.com with the subject line: WEAR ART. (If you are submitting a link to original works that are wearable, as opposed to art + design you would like us to consider for reproduction for screenprinted t-shirts, etc., please use the subject line: WEAR ART-originals.) If you do not receive a bounced back or undeliverable email, please consider this to be a confirmation that your email has been received and will be reviewed. It may take us several weeks to reply to those artists, architects + designers who have art + design we may be interested in for WEAR ART so your patience is appreciated. We will only be able to reply to those email submissions we are considering for further review and inclusion in WEAR ART. There is no submission fee associated with this opportunity.  If your work is selected for inclusion in WEAR ART, you will receive further information outlining project details.
